Coded Welding Qualification Training

As a fully qualified and coded welder, you will possess the skills required to work in some of the most highly regulated sectors in the UK and on a range of safety-critical applications, pressure vessels and pressure pipework. Gaining coded qualifications gives you proof of your skill as a welder and will give you more options when looking for jobs within welding.

We will work in line with your company requirements to oversee the specification, witness and approval of mechanical and metallurgical testing of welded samples as UKAS approved laboratories.

At The Welding Academy, we provide training for qualifications in coded MIG/MAG, TIG and MMA. Practical training can be delivered at our purpose-built workshop in Chester, where you can bring along the materials you wish to weld. Alternatively, we can provide on-site training at your place of employment.

The standards offered include:

  • ASME IX
  • BS 4872 Parts 1 & 2
  • BS EN 9606-1
  • BS EN ISO 9606-2

Coded Welder Testing

As well as coded welder training, we are also able to conduct ASME IX or BS EN 9606 welder qualification testing at our sites in the UK. The Welding Academy is fully approved by the TWI (The Welding Institute) to deliver coding qualifications. All of our tutors, examiners, and inspectors at The Welding Academy hold the relevant CSWIP qualifications, allowing us to provide welder qualification testing.

Maintaining your coded status

Welder coding certificates must be signed every six months by a suitably qualified person, by signing they confirm that the welder is still producing welds of the required standard. You must also be formally re-tested at least every two years to maintain your coded welder status.

ASME IX and BS EN 9606 Tests

These international coding standards are suitable for pressure vessels, pressure pipework, and other critical applications like bridges and some structural steelwork.

The tests are carried out in accordance with welding standard ASME IX or BS EN 9606 and are usually subject to a volumetric inspection, such as radiography or ultrasonic examination. Each test can cover a range of welding variables, for example, material thickness and welding positions, and this depends on the particular weld configuration.

You can choose to do one of the two assessments we offer:

  • ASME IX Standard

  • BS EN ISO 9606 Standard
