The Level 3 Awards in Advanced Welding Skills are ideal if you’ve worked in welding for some time – you have plenty of experience. You want to develop your skills further so that you can undertake intricate welding work and quality control.

Level 3 City & Guilds Award in Advanced Welding Skills Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) – PIPE

Aim of the course

The course is designed to enable candidates to gain welding skills and knowledge to a level that will enable them to work in complex positions and prepare them for undertaking qualifications at NVQ level 3 and BS EN 287 Welder approval testing by having an acceptable standard based upon ISO 5817 – Arc welded joints in steel.

How is it taught?

This is predominantly a practical course delivered in our workshop. It includes all the underpinning knowledge of welding as a profession, as well as the Health & Safety requirements. Alongside the practical workshop sessions, you will be expected to do a small amount of reading and internet research to answer the assessment questions at the end of the course.

You will need to bring PPE i.e. steel toe cap boots and flame-retardant overalls. These can be hired from our shared facilities or purchased directly from our stockroom.

Practical Skills Learning Outcomes?

Learning Outcome One – Produce a single-vee pipe butt weld in the PA flat-rotated (ASME 1G) position
Learning Outcome Two – Produce a single-vee pipe butt weld in the PC horizontal (ASME 2G) position
Learning Outcome Three – Produce a single-vee pipe butt weld in the PF vertical-upwards (ASME 5G) position
Learning Outcome Four – Produce a pipe tee fillet weld in the PF vertical-upwards (ASME 5F) position
Learning Outcome Five – Produce a single-vee pipe butt weld in the H-LO45 inclined (ASME 6G) position

Knowledge Learning Outcomes?

Learning Outcome Six – Explain the health & safety and welding specific underpinning knowledge requirements for the process (TIG).

Entry requirements

You must complete at least two Level 2 units before you will be accepted onto the Level 3 programme.

Further qualifications

You can progress to another welding process at Level 3 (MMA, TIG or MIG) or pursue a coding standard.
